In solemn remembrance and deep appreciation of the God-fearing and dauntless Pilgrims, who courageously established the first English settlement in New England, their descendants came together to establish the General Society of Mayflower Descendants on January 12, 1897. This pivotal organization was founded to honor their forebearers’ pioneering spirit and their significant role in American history. The founding members included State Societies from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, representing some of the earliest settlements in the United States. These initial groups were instrumental in laying the foundational principles of the society, emphasizing historical preservation, genealogical accuracy, and the commemoration of the Pilgrims’ legacy.
As the years passed, the General Society expanded into a substantial federation, now encompassing 54 member Societies across diverse regions. These include all 50 U.S. States, the District of Columbia, and extends internationally to include Europe, Australia, and Canada. This expansive network serves as a testament to the widespread impact and enduring legacy of the Mayflower descendants. Among these, the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maryland stands out, having been officially chartered on March 4, 1938, and organized with great enthusiasm and commitment on the following day, March 5, 1938. This chapter, like its counterparts, dedicates itself to preserving the memory and upholding the values of those early pioneers, ensuring that their contributions to building the foundations of modern America are remembered and celebrated.
