Our History

To recognize the founding of our Maryland Mayflower Society, your Board of Governors presented a commemorative plaque along with a framed print to the management of the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore. The plaque and print of the “Crossing of the Mayflower” by our own Captain Fritz Briggs were presented to the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotel on January 29, 2011. The Board returned for the official unveiling of the plaque and print on March 5, 2011, exactly 73 years to the day of our original founding. The Lord Baltimore Hotel opened its doors on December 30, 1928, just ten years prior to the founding of our Society. The twenty-two story French Renaissance style hotel is over 289 feet tall and was once hailed as the largest hotel ever built in the state of Maryland. The Hotel has been recognized as a National landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the classic style popular during the 1920’s, it now takes its place as one of the grand old hotels in the Country. Both the print and the plaque are a reminder of our Society’s history and longstanding partnership with the historic Lord Baltimore Hotel. The Hotel is located on 20 West Baltimore Street. If you visit the hotel, look for the plaque, which hangs near the Baltimore Street entrance next to the gift shop.
